Medical Laboratory

Medical Laboratory Science is the study of the scientific principles underlying the disciplines practiced in diagnostic and medical research laboratories.

Introduction

Medical Laboratory Science is the study of the scientific principles underlying the disciplines practiced in diagnostic and medical research laboratories (Clinical Chemistry, Cytology, Cytogenetic, Hematology, Histology, Histo-chemistry, Microbiology, Microscopy, Molecular Biology, Immunopathology, and Toxicology).

To earn a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science, student must complete a four-year general program, following completion of the prerequisite courses. The aim is to produce a "generalist" medical laboratory scientist, an individual who can adapt to and understand the changes that are occurring and will continue to occur in the medical laboratory.

Our students are sufficiently trained to pursue careers in teaching, administration, research and development, and industry; on top of that, this degree allows our students to further their education in medical, dental and graduate school as they have fulfilled virtually all of prerequisite courses.

According to United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) 2013, medical laboratory report curriculum for Somalia; there has been a phenomenal growth in both knowledge and technology in the field of medical Laboratory sciences, which has transformed diagnostic services globally for the better. The need for accreditation and certification is routinely becoming a necessity in clinical laboratories, especially those dealing in HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Tuberculosis and other infectious diseases supported by the Global Fund. The innovations, developments and use of point of care diagnostics that reduce turn-around times, application of biomarkers as diagnostics, establishment of quality assurance and control as core activities in medical laboratories are some of the new advances made in the field. There is thus need to educate and train competent laboratory workforce and to adequately prepare them to meet the high expectations required in meeting the quality assurance demands of clinical laboratories.
